Barking Dogs and Registration Campaign - 31 Aug 2009
Notice to Residents

Recently there have been a number of complaints in our towns in regards to excessive noise created by barking dogs.

Is your dog chained without enough room to move?

Is your dog under exercised or not exercised at all?

Is your dog untrained, lonely or sick?

Is your dog kept in circumstances that are unsuitable for that particular breed?

These are some of the causes of why dogs bark unreasonably. It is the dog owner’s responsibility to ensure that any nuisance barking is controlled. Remember it is also your responsibility to ensure your dog is cared for, prevented from escaping from your property and is microchipped and registered with the department of local government.

In the coming weeks Council officers will be commencing a Shire-wide door-knock campaign to work with the residents to ensure that the legal requirements of microchipping and registration are complied with.

This campaign will assist Council in their services to the community and in accurately identifying the number of dogs and companion animals living in the village areas of the Shire. more ..

Driver Fatigue and the Newell - 21 Aug 2006
The Newell Highway is 1055 kilometres in length in New South Wales and runs from the townships of Boggabilla/Goondiwindi on the Queensland border to Tocumwal on the Victorian border. The highway is very much the lifeline for the people living in Western and South Western New South Wales. The Newell Highway carries goods to the markets, brings goods and services to the region, and carries people to and from work and school and holiday makers across the state. It is also the major transport link between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Driver fatigue is a significant problem on the Newell Highway. In the 5 year period between 1998-2002 there were 35 people killed and 188 people injured on the Newell Hwy. Fatigue was a factor in 24.5% of casualties and accounts for 18.9% (239) of all crashes. These crashes often involve local people from towns located on the Newell Highway. The financial and social impact on the community associated with a driver fatigue crash can be extremely devastating especially in the small communities where everyone knows everyone. Many of the towns and villages on the Newell Highway have small populations. more ..
