Meet Your Councillors

Last modified: August 25, 2009 - 2:22 PM

Warrumbungle Shire Council is represented by nine elected members, consisting of the Mayor and eight Councillors.

Councillors are elected by the community and have a responsibility to the Shire as a whole.  All Members are elected for a four year term.

Councillors elected September 2008

Mayor Peter Shinton
‘Oxley’
Oxley Highway
COONABARABRAN  NSW  2357
Phone:  6842 2055
Fax:  6842 2169

As a Councillor and Mayor, serving on council committees and through his membership of local organizations, Peter has been actively involved in community issues.  Peter regards the most important issues in the shire to be those projects that will encourage new residents, employment, child care, education, medical services and community and aged care services.
Peter says that the job of council is no longer just roads, rubbish and rates, there is now involvement in tourism, environmental issues, planning and development, childcare, community transport, road safety, social planning, investment and budgeting.

Deputy Mayor Murray Coe
‘Ewendale’
DUNEDOO  NSW  2844
Phone:  6375 0265
Fax:  6375 0265

Murray as Deputy Mayor will continue with his passion for improving our rural road network. A farmer and grazier east of Dunedoo, he also operates an owner-driver transport business so he is acutely aware of the condition and the need to upgrade our rural roads. Murray is an avid sportsman and has always been heavily involved in many local sports.  Murray enjoys the challenges of being a Councillor and the difference he can make for the community.
As a farmer he understands the difficulties and issues that face primary producers and wants to ensure they have a voice in council meetings.

Councillor Mark Powell
‘Oban’
COOLAH  NSW  2843
Phone:  6377 4575
Fax:  6377 1350

For more than 30 years Mark was a local vet (now retired) and during that time he traveled around our shire visiting clients, which gave him a great insight into the needs of people in our rural communities.
One of Mark’s biggest goals is to achieve fair and even representation for the smaller towns and villages in the shire.  Mark says his best qualities are that he is fair-minded and always prepared to listen to what people have to say.

Councillor Kerry Campbell
Lot 141 Goorianawa Road
BARADINE  NSW  2396
Phone:  6843 1145

Baradine resident Kerry Campbell believes her long-time involvement with the community has given her a sound understanding of the issues affecting the shire. Among the projects Kerry would like to see addressed by Warrumbungle Shire Council are the development of local roads and infrastructure. Kerry believes the shire needs to maintain and upgrade existing infrastructure such as parks, recreation areas, services and aerodromes, as well as provide for future costs in this area.
Kerry says she is committed to the region and believes that she has the skills to articulate residents’ concerns at Council.

Councillor Ron Sullivan
‘Bingo’
COONABARABRAN  NSW  2357
Phone:  6842 8226
Fax:  6842 8226

An experienced councillor, Ron has 20 years of service to local government and says he has a proven track record with sound financial management.  Ron  is always available to be approached by ratepayers and is proud of what he has achieved in his council terms. The LEP and how environmental issues will affect our farming community is a high priority together with school bus routes, sports facilities, parks and gardens.
A Purlewaugh farmer, Ron is acutely aware of the needs of farming families and primary producers.

He says he dislikes delay and likes getting things done quickly and efficiently. Married to a local accountant, Donna, the pair have two children Hamish and Eromi  and an 800 acre farm near Gulgong. He says his experience on the land gives him some insight into the needs of primary producers as well.
Tilak’s main objective though is to ensure our local health services are maintained and improved. He sees health as one of the most important issues in our small communities.

Councillor Denis Todd
‘Wheatfields’
BARADINE  NSW  2396
Phone:  6843 1831
Fax:  6843 1118

Well know Baradine farmer and grazier, Denis Todd, has more than eight years of experience serving as a Councillor. Believing that council has the most weight in determining the direction the shire will go in the future, Denis says one of the main challenges is to attract more people to take up residence in the shire and to improve services and facilities.
In his view important issues include the maintenance and improvement of existing infrastructure such as roads, bridges and sporting facilities.

Councillor Ray Lewis
Post Office Residence
NEILREX  NSW  2831
Phone:  6886 3517
Fax:  6886 3544

Ray is confident and passionate, he says he’s not afraid to provide a louder voice for the smaller towns and the rural voters who live beyond town limits.  He wants a balanced council that represents all ratepayers, and would like to see the council focus on essential services and infrastructure such as roads. A plumber by trade, Ray was born in Coonabarabran and his family connections in the area date back 150 years. He calls the small village of Neilrex home but he maintains a shire-wide attitude, with a keen eye kept on the communities of Binnaway and Mendooran as well as rural landholders.
He understands the importance of education, Ray and his wife Janette have operated a school bus run for more than 20 years.

Councillor Victor Schmidt
‘Riveredge’
Timor Road
COONABARABRAN  NSW  2357
Phone:  6842 1500
Fax:  6842 5367

Coonabarabran businessman, Victor Schmidt is heavily involved in and passionate about the community.
